1918年的美国乡下，8岁的桃瑞丝由于爸爸投身战场，寄居在邻居家被当成了女佣。桃瑞丝坚持写信给父亲期盼他能回来带自己离开。然而，她才发现对她刻薄的一家人正在酝酿着一个可怕的阴谋。桃瑞斯在有限的时间内必须逃离她躲藏的阁楼。恐惧而绝望的桃瑞斯发出祈祷，慢慢她看见自己的手臂变成了一双硕大的翅膀，窗外便是她所向往的自由……
