文革末期，各种媒体充斥极左言论，谎话连篇累牍，刚从干校调回报社的傅彬（李志舆 饰）为此十分苦恼。同事李记者（史久峰 饰）叮嘱他凡事得过且过，不要太认真，但记者的良心时时折磨着傅彬。一天，他奉报社宋书记（袁岳 饰）之命，与李记者去医学院采访，亲眼目睹了非常荒唐的一幕，内心 受到极大剌激。无奈中，他去请教因说真话差点被逼疯的老恩师（乔奇 饰）。回到家中，他与妻子共同回忆起初恋时节，人与人之间纯洁诚实的生活。他决定找宋书记，求他不要让自己写骗人的文章，妻子怕他惹事，好言相劝，他忍不住打了妻子一记耳光。正直的傅彬由于说出真话，被捕入狱，但他坚信，国家不会永远这样下去......
