申东赫1983年11月19日出生在朝鲜的再教育营，他一出生就是一名政治犯。他的父母是两名得到当局允许而结婚的囚犯。申东赫在14号收容所——实际上是死亡集中营——里度过了整个童年和青年时期。他从6岁起就被迫劳动，忍饥挨饿，遭受狱警残酷的殴打和折磨。他对铁丝网外面的世界一无所知。 直到23岁，他才在一个老囚犯的帮助下设法逃脱。用了几个月的时间，他途径朝鲜和中国，最终抵达韩国，在那里他遇到了一个他完全陌生的世界Shin Dong-Huyk was born on November 19, 1983 as a political prisoner in a North Korean re-education camp. He was a child of two prisoners who had been married by order of the wardens. He spent his entire childhood and youth in Camp 14, in fact a death camp. He was forced to labor since he was six years old and suffered from hunger, beatings and torture, always at the mercy of the wardens. He knew nothing about the world outside the barbed-wire fences. At the age of 23, with the help of an older prisoner, he managed to escape. For months he traveled through North Korea and China and finally to South Korea, where he encountered a world completely strange to him.
