一场抢劫事件夺走了一位前警长妻子的生命。这个警长期饱受丧妻的折磨，他发誓找到那次抢案中的七个匪徒，并亲手杀死这7个匪徒。在他的“捕猎”途中，他帮助一对从堪萨斯旅行到加利福利亚的夫妇，而且同时他不得不面对一位他曾经亲手送进监狱的人……Ex-sheriff Ben Stride tracks the seven men who held up a Wells Fargo office and killed his wife. Stride is tormented by the fact that his own failure to keep his job was the cause of his wife's working in the express office and thus he is partly responsible for her death. Stride encounters a married couple heading west for California and helps them. Along the way they are joined by two n'er-do-wells, Masters and Clete, who know that Stride is after the express-office robbers. They plan to let Stride lead them to the bandits, then make away with the loot themselves. But they aren't the only ones carrying a secret.
